If you’ve been exploring Pilates classes in Cardiff, you’ve likely encountered two popular options — Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates. As someone who has recently qualified with a Level 3 Diploma in Mat Pilates and is currently training for my Level 3 Diploma in Reformer Pilates, I’m often asked: “What’s the difference?” and “Which one is best for me?”

The truth is, both styles share the same core principles. However, the experience, benefits, and equipment involved are quite different. In this blog, I’ll break down how they work, the unique benefits of each, and how to decide which is right for you.

What is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is performed on a padded exercise mat. It uses your own body weight for resistance. Sometimes, small props like resistance bands, Pilates balls, or rings are added for variety and challenge.

Key Features of Mat Pilates

  • No large equipment is required — just a mat.

  • It can be done anywhere — at home, in the park, or in the studio.

  • Focuses on body awareness, control, and functional movement.

Benefits of Mat Pilates

  1. Core Strength – Builds deep abdominal and back strength for better posture and stability.

  2. Improved Flexibility – Lengthens and mobilises muscles and joints.

  3. Postural Alignment – Teaches correct positioning and body mechanics.

  4. Accessibility – Great for beginners and all fitness levels, with plenty of modifications.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a specialist piece of equipment called the Pilates Reformer. This equipment is a bed-like frame with a sliding carriage, springs for adjustable resistance, and straps for hands and feet.

Key Features of Reformer Pilates

  • Adjustable spring resistance adds intensity or assistance.

  • A wide range of exercises targets every muscle group.

  • Allows more precision and control in movements.

Benefits of Reformer Pilates

  1. Full-Body Strengthening – Works muscles through a greater range of motion with added resistance.

  2. Joint-Friendly Training – Low-impact and perfect for injury recovery or rehabilitation.

  3. Posture & Balance – Promotes alignment while challenging stability.

  4. Progressive Resistance – Easily adapted to suit beginners, athletes, and advanced Pilates practitioners.

Mat vs Reformer – Which Should You Choose?

| Feature | Mat Pilates | Reformer Pilates |

|----------------|-------------------------------|-----------------------------------|

| Equipment | Mat & small props | Reformer machine with springs & carriage |

| Accessibility | Anywhere, minimal setup | Studio-based (specialist equipment) |

| Intensity | Bodyweight resistance | Adjustable resistance with springs |

| Best For | Building foundation strength & mobility | Adding resistance, rehab, athletic performance |

In short:

  • If you’re new to Pilates or want something you can do anywhere, start with Mat Pilates.

  • If you’re ready for more variety, resistance, and tailored challenge, try Reformer Pilates.

Why Try Both?

Many of my clients in Pontcanna enjoy combining both styles. They use Mat Pilates for mobility, core control, and flexibility. Meanwhile, they turn to Reformer Pilates for resistance training and advanced movement patterns. Together, they offer a complete system for strength, stability, and functional fitness.

The Importance of Core Strength

Core strength is essential for overall fitness. It supports your spine and improves your posture. Both Mat and Reformer Pilates focus on developing this strength. This focus helps prevent injuries and enhances athletic performance.

Choosing the Right Instructor

Finding the right instructor can make a significant difference in your Pilates journey. Look for someone who is certified and has experience in both Mat and Reformer Pilates. A knowledgeable instructor can tailor sessions to your specific needs and goals.
